Starting a Summer Garden out of a Soup Can

Planting in a Soup Container
In most areas such as big cities that are full of cement, brick and mortar one would wonder if having a flower garden is a possibility.
The answer is yes and this is due to using containers to plant in.
Container gardens are easy to maintain and they look so lovely in the summer months when all the perennials are in bloom.
One of my favorite containers is the soup can which can come in larger industrial sizes, like the one restaurants use.
All you need is some good planting soil and enough sunlight to keep the flowers happy.
My favorite plants are the drought tolerant because if you live in the city and have a busy schedule it may be hard to remember to water the plant containers.
Try using Phlomis, Lamium, Platycodon, Thyme, and Veronica which has a nice purple blooms that grow 2 to 3 feet tall.
How to attach Soup Cans to a Wooden Fence or Brick Wall
Now that you have gotten this great idea for your soup can garden lets look at how to attach the cans to a wall.
In the picture the industrial size pizza cans are hung on a brick wall which seems kind of impossible at first glance.
It takes some creative ways to look at your summer jobs when starting your projects.
I dug deeper in to finding out how this project was done.
The original piece was done in Toronto by a very nice lady who is full of life and ideas. Her Flicker name is Happy Sleepy.
Apparently how it was done is you are going to need some wire, drill bit, nails, hammer, drywall plug and screw.
You will then put a whole in the top of the can and then attach it to the wall with some wire on to the screw in the brick which can also be repeated on a wooden fence if you like.
Then fill the cans with your favorite planting soil and flowers, choose a variety of colors to give the wall some character.

Soup Can Garden Art
Creative Plant Containers
Pizza sauce containers work well also, you can use them on a wall and then paint them with rust paint in your favorite color.
Communities that take pride in their city can really come together and make a difference by planting shrubs, trees, and plants in areas that are not used to having gardens.
Creative crafters can also use soup cans to decorate art projects with ornaments and decorations.
In my community there is a group of gardeners who come together each month to start soup container projects planting vegetables, ferns and roses.
It is really exciting to see the different shapes and colors that show up in the containers after a few months have past.
The great thing about these type of city gardens is that it shows the community that with a little effort it is possible to make a corner, field or complex beautiful again.

So creative! Thanks so much - we should recycle everything. But hey why not do it beautifully.
Thanks a million and rated up. Yay!
Attaching cans to a wall. Gardeners meeting every month to share ideas. Sprucing up with plants. That's pretty cool. :)
This is so clever and looks so good. Remember when folks used to be sooooo creative? Then we just lost it.
Thanks for this creative reminder!
Celebritie, this is wonderful! I am putting this one in my gardening bookmark file for next year. I love the creativity of this idea!
Really great idea - thanks. Rated up and I'm a fan.
A can garden looks absolutely wonderful! And the blue color goes so well with the flowers and makes the best of them. Thanks for the great ideas, voted up!

Looks very cute. But I would hesitate to attach to a brick wall without permission from the owner of the building. Even if it were my brick wall I don't think I'd want that many holes in my brick.

I love the picture of the can garden. I'd like to hear more about how you are able to put this on the wall and maybe more ideas about how to get a group of people together to garden.
